Mini guide to Detroit
Better known as Motor town or Motown, Detroit is situated in the flat plains of southeast Michigan, located on the Detroit River. Famous for producing cars ever since the first Model Ts rolled off Henry Fords production line, it is an industrial city with a heart, producing some of Americas best soul and R&B music over the years.
The People Mover is a quick, easy way around downtown's more pleasant sites on a 3 mile elevated track. A SMART bus service travels to Greenfield Village, the Detroit Zoo and points outside of downtown.
Detroit's downtown is dominated by the Renaissance Center; seven huge circular glass towers along the Detroit River. The RenCen is surrounded by revitalized historic neighborhoods such as Greektown.
Nearby is Trappers Alley, a historic fur trapper's warehouse that now houses shops and a museum.
A few miles north of the downtown is the Cultural Center, a cluster of world class galleries and museums. The Museum of African American History is the world's largest African-American historical and cultural museum. The museum is near the Detroit Science Center.
The Detroit Historical Museum, a couple of doors away, offers an interesting history of Detroit's earlier days.
One of the highlights of the city for all music lovers, The Motown Museum gives an appealing tour through the original recording studio, passing through rooms full of photos, album covers, newspaper clippings, gold records.
Also worth a visit is Detroit Zoo. This was one of the first zoos to have cage-less animal exhibits, The Penguin House is the most fun of all.
