Car Hire Corfu
Mini guide to Corfu
Jewel of the Ionian Islands, Corfu (Kerkyra to the locals) is known for its abundance of wildflowers and cypress groves, Venetian architecture and herb-scented mountains. Being the closest Islands to Italy (and the car ferry) have also meant that Corfu is now somewhat over-crowded and shamelessly developed.
Corfu Town is notable for its ancient fortresses and modern highrises, but the serene Spianada gardens and elegant row of cafe-filled arcades, known as the Liston, are its centrepeice. Wandering the narrow alleyways of the Venetian old town is delightful and Georgian, Byzantine and stuccoed traditional Greek buildings can all be seen. The Archaeological Museum has some genuine treasures.
The east coast either side of the town are heavily developed but lively. For a little more space and peace, Nisaki and Agni further north are full of lovely sea front tavernas, while the Venetian harbour of Kouloura is picturesque. Kassiopi, still has traces of its Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian past.
South of Corfu Town is the Kanoni Peninsula, liberally sprinkled with ancient ruins, including the circular Tomb of Menecrates and Temple of Artemis, along with other remains of the original capital. From here you can admire the postcard perfect offshore islets of Moni Vlahernas and Mouse Island.
