Mini guide to Castrop - Rauxel
Castrop is a village that since 1926 is located in the city of Castrop-Rauxel. The name dates back to 834 (where it was known as Villa Castorpe, a Roman military outpost), and is derived from ‘kast’ (for storage) and ‘trop/torp’ (for village). Castrop got its free city rights in 1384.
Castrop – Rauxel is located in the region of Recklinghausen, in the Munich district in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is also in the area of the Ruhr River, which is a river flowing into the Rhine. Castrop – Rauxel is well serviced by three major highways, and a rail line that connects the city with other cities along the Ruhr.
It also has a small yacht club on the Rhine-Herne canal that runs through the city. During the 1800s and 1900s, Castrop – Rauxel was well-known for its major industries: coalmining (there used to be seven coalmines in Castrop – Rauxel )and steel producing. Companies such as Krupp, Thyssen and Hoesch made Castrop – Rauxel famous.
The last mine closed in 1984, a mine called Erin after its Irish owner William Thomas Mulvany. Indeed, it was Mulvany and his mine (founded in 1867) that made the town, and it achieved municipality status in 1902. The mine may be closed, but the Erin Colliery is still there and provides an interesting and historic place to rest or take a walk.
Like many other towns and cities along the Ruhr, Castrop – Rauxel is attempting to change its image from blue collar working city to a modern place of leisure and recreation. It now boasts a 27 hole golf course, cultural events and a high property value. There are now plenty of places to dine, with Castrop – Rauxel boasting many fine restaurants and cafes, from traditional to modern and everything in between. Whether it’s a great cup of coffee or a pint of German brew, Castrop – Rauxel can offer it all!
