Cairns is the main town of northern Queensland, surrounded by complete wilderness; from beaches and reefs, to mountains and tropical jungles and is an ideal place to access the Great Barrier Reef. It is also only a short trip from Cape Tribulation where two World Heritage listed areas merge.

The cities natural attractions are the most rewarding, starting with Flecker Botanic Gardens, located on Collins Avenue 4 km from the CBD. It includes a very good fernery, orchid house and an exhibition about usage of plants by Aborigines for bush food and medicine. Across the road from the Botanic Gardens is the Centenary Lakes Boardwalk. From the Boardwalk you can observe typical rainforest species, including giant paperbark trees and Pandanus.

If you want to stretch your legs and get a nice view of the city and Trinity Inlet, why not explore the Red or Blue Arrow walking trails. Both of these take you through the Mount Whitfield National Park, lasting about an hour or four hours respectively.

This northern and tableland district is a treasure trove of outdoor activities. From big game fishing to relaxing tropical bushwalks in the Daintree Forest or even a cross country adventure into the heart of Barramundi territory. Whatever your preference, the area has a multitude of discoveries to quench the appetite.
