Before Brodeaux, there was Cahors. The wine produced here in the Middle Ages helped give France its wine-making stripes before Bordeaux had even began its long history of viticulture. The city is the capital of the Lot department, named after the Lot River that snakes its way around the outskirts of the city.

The eponymous city sits in a particular bend of the river, which is why it is known locally as the ‘almost island’. There is a scenic bridge crossing called Valentré Bridge. The city, reflecting perhaps its suffusion with fine vintage, hit its peak in the 18th century and has been mellowing ever since. This means that the city looks much like it did back in the day, and as such has become a desirable tourist destination.
