Famous for its large country houses and the Singing Ringing Tree sculpture, the Lancashire town of Burnley is a picturesque destination just 30 miles north of Manchester and 35 miles west of Leeds. It is surrounded by several Areas of Outstanding Beauty and well linked to its surroundings by a great road network. It is, therefore, the ideal place to enjoy excursions, not only in Lancashire but also to other counties close by. Car rental is the most popular and convenient way of making daytrips and enjoying the stunning drives through some of England’s best countryside.

Best time to go
Burnley can be enjoyed all year round, as it experiences cool summers and mild winters. Still, many visitors prefer to visit in the spring and summer when they can truly enjoy the town’s natural scenery. The summer is also the driest time of year in Burnley, while December and January are the wettest months.

Driving
As Burnley is quite small, most sights can be seen on foot. However, a car is useful for getting out of the town centre and to the surrounding countryside. There are a number of car parks right in Downtown Burnley, with both short-term and long-term stay parking available. These all run on pay and display systems, with tariffs ranging between £3.50 and £5 per day. On-street parking is predominately reserved for residents with permits and blue badge holders. The M65 dissects Burnley, connecting it to Blackburn and the M6 to the east, which then links it to the rest of the country.

Transport

The local Lancashire Bus offers bus services throughout Burnley, as well as to its surrounding areas; however, the service is not extensive. As a result, taxis are plentiful and ranks can be found everywhere.

Trains
Northern Rail provides train services to all four of Burnley’s railway stations. The Burnley Manchester Road station runs a weekend service to Blackburn and Leeds, while Burnley Central, Burnley Barracks and Rose Grove run along the East Lancashire Line from Preston to Colne.

Taxis
There is no problem finding a taxi in Burnley, and tariffs should not be more than £5 for travel within the town centre. Reliable taxi companies, including Burnley & Crown, King Taxi and Royal Taxi, can be called or flagged down on the street.

Buses
The Burnley bus station is a landmark in itself, having won awards due to its innovative design. Lancashire Bus runs services from the bus station to other areas of the town, as well as to Preston, Accrington, Nelson and Manchester, among other destinations. Its Starship line of buses serve the town itself and the villages just outside of it.

Exploring

Burnley, surrounded by fields and moorland, is situated at the union of the River Brun and the River Calder.
