Car Hire Burnie/Wynard Airport - Mini guide to Burnie/Wynard Airport

Burnie city is a port city on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia. It was originally known as Emu Bay but was renamed Burnie in the early 1840s. It was declared a city in 1988 and currently has a population of around nineteen thousand people.

In the adjacent town of Wynyard is Burnie Airport, which is also called Wynyard Airport. The airport is roughly a twenty minute drive from Burnie city. All major car hire companies have operations at Burnie Airport.

Burnie Airport is the closest Tasmanian mainland facility to the major mainland airport of Melbourne. Almost two thousand passengers per week, which roughly translates to a hundred thousand passengers using the airport every year, use the airport.

Transport within Burnie city and its suburbs is provided by a bus service. Alternatively one can use any of the various car hire companies. The city is connected with Devonport by a highway as well as a railway line, which is mainly used for transporting cargo. To the West Coast of Tasmania, the city is connected by a highway.

Burnie city recorded favourable growth with the discovery of significant mineral deposits on the west coast of Tasmania in the 1880s. The mining deposits however begun to decline around 1915. Today it is well known for its deepwater port. In fact Burnie Port is Tasmania's largest general cargo port and Australia's fifth largest container port. Other key industries include paper making, cheese making, shipping, heavy machinery manufacturing and farming.

The average temperature in summer varies between 12.5 and 21 °C. Around this time the city gets around sixteen hours of sunlight per day. In winter, temperature ranges from 6 to 13 °C. The amount of sunlight reduces by half at around this time dropping to only gets eight hours of sunlight. Burnie receives an average of 994 millimetres of rainfall per year.
