Car Hire Boston Goverment Centre - Mini guide to Boston Goverment Centre
The Government Centre is located in Boston, Massachusetts. It is a plaza, or city square with in the downtown area of the city. The square is bounded by Court, Congress, Cambridge, and Sudbury Streets. There is an anchoring square called Scollay Square at the intersection of Court, Tremont, and Cambridge Streets. The Government Centre is the location of Boston City Hall, two state office buildings, two county courthouses, and two federal office buildings. There is an MBTA subway interchange station located there as well.
The square is used for large outdoor events. In the summer, you can find many free concerts to attend here. In the winter, there is a wonderful, large Santa’s workshop display. Cultural landmarks formed the square so that even the likes of Charles Dickens had been known to visit the square. Even commerce was booming around the square. The dentist’s office on the square in the late 1800’s was the first to use ether on their patients. And the city’s first daguerreotypist also had an office building on the square.
In the 1950s, the square was planning to be torn down and redeveloped so that lower-income resident and businesses could be removed. Officials tried to reopen the famous Old Howard Theatre, but the plans were not working. Unfortunately, the square suffered a fire and the city went on with its plans to destroy the buildings and displace the residents. The square was rebuilt and government buildings began popping up, giving the square its contemporary name of Government Centre.
