A picturesque location surrounded by idyllic, aquamarine seas, Bonifacio dates back to the ninth century, when it was founded by the Marquis of Tuscany who bore the name Boniface II when he became pope.

The medieval architecture and narrow streets provide a dramatic attraction for sightseers who are eager to soak up the atmosphere, whilst naturalists may want to marvel at the geography of the place. Bonifacio is stationed on top of a 1.5km (1 mile) long limestone outcrop that is approximately sixty-four meters high, giving breath taking views of the Bonifacio Strait, a flank of water that is only seven miles wide and which separates Bonifacio from the Italian island of Sardinia.

Driving through the picturesque scenery, you should make a point to stop at the St. Dominique church. Designed in the gothic period (around the thirteenth to fourteenth century) there is a striking contrast between the main building and the subtle differences of a tower added much later during the fifteenth century. This tower houses some incredible wooden statues, a real must-see.

The town itself is divided into two. The old town (the vielle ville) is placed on what was once a ninth century citadel and overlooks the Mediterranean. The port is nestled below on a natural inlet and is a popular station for the fishing industries. The town’s charm lies in its strong historical roots as well as its beautiful sandy beaches.

The town is a short drive from the Figari airport and, on multiple occasions throughout the day, a ferry to Sardinia is available.
