Bellegarde sur Valserine is a commune in the department of Ain, France, not far from Lyon. Situated on the convergence of the Valserine and Rhône rivers in the lovely Valserine valley, this small town is on the rail line from Paris Gare de Lyon to Evian. It was in the 1980s that the TGV high-speed train reached Bellegarde, which is now just three hours away from Paris and is a significant station on the Paris-Geneva route.

Another railway line, the Haut-Bugey line, links Bellegarde sur Valserine to Bourg en Bresse through the Jura massif. It is worthwhile to explore Bellegarde’s surroundings by rental car, particularly the Alyscamps in Arles, a large Roman necropolis, and the Arènes de Nîmes, the world’s best preserved Roman amphitheatre.
