The historic city of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts wonderful architecture, a variety of museums, regular festivals and theatre, as well as great shopping and dining, justifiably attracting thousands of visitors every year.
Among the chief attractions of the city are the Roman Baths (on Stall Street) built approximately 2000 years ago, and the hot springs here yield over one million litres per day. Another popular venue is the beautiful Pump Room, almost unchanged since opening in 1795, a charming place to have a traditional tea or a glass of warm Spa water whilst listening to the renowned Pump Room Trio.
A walk around the city centre (built in a bow of the River Avon) offers a host amazing attractions. Near to the Pump Room and Roman Baths is the imposing 500-year-old Abbey (on York Street) with its stunning vaulted ceilings and Heritage Vaults Museum. A visit to the 18th Century Assembly Rooms, with its Ball Room, Octagon and Card Room, not to mention the famous Museum of Costume is a must. Alternatively, head to the Royal Crescent, a majestic row of Georgian houses with Ionic columns, of which part is a museum of affluent Georgian life.
Entertainment choices in Bath are diverse, with opera, theatre, a variety of live music, and the large number of bars, pubs and nightclubs youd expect in any fashionable English city. There is also a wealth of formal and informal restaurants, many run by some of Europes top chefs.
A short drive from Bath are some other world famous sites, such as Stonehenge (50 miles), Glastonbury Abbey and Tor and the ancient earthen settlement at Avebury. The stunning Cheddar Gorge and Caves and the stately home and safari park at Longleat House are also an easy day trip away.
Bath is a short train ride (90 mins) from London Paddington station, with has a convenient shuttle connection to London Heathrow.
