The magnificent peninsula of Baja California is comprised of the two states of Baja California and Baja California Sur. Here you can delight in the sophistication of the cities or enjoy the tranquillity of more than 1,600kms of pristine coastline. There are also prehistoric sites featuring cave paintings by early Baja Californians as well as missions from the colonial period to discover.
Visitors can choose to drive the modern highways of Baja California, or explore uninhabited areas. Surfing and sport fishing are also popular options, along with shopping and going to the latest discos and clubs. A good place to rest can be found in one of the many fishing towns, or you can relax on a boat while trying to find one of nine different species of whales that pass through the waters.
Baja California includes the resort areas of Buena Vista, Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, La Paz, Loreto, Rosarito, San Felipe and San Jose Del Cabo. The area is also home to major modern cities such as Tijuana and Mexicali, along with hidden gems such as Bahia De Los Angeles, East Cape, Mulege San Ignacio, San Quintin and Todos Santos.
Tijuana is just 26kms from San Diego, California, where you can catch a trolley to the border. The city offers a quick taste of Mexico's many delights, and boasts a wealth of shopping opportunities and entertaining nightlife. The Tijuana Cultural Centre is home to exhibits about Mexico's people, events and culture. The centre's Museum of the Californias provides a great overview of the Baja California peninsula and includes interactive exhibits and replicas of Baja's most important missions.
Mexicali is the capital of Baja California, and is a fertile farmland surrounded by desert. With more than 200,000 hectares under irrigation, this impressive area is responsible for some of Mexico's major crops, including wheat and cotton. The city offers a wide variety of activities, including wrestling, boxing and golf. The boiling craters and mud volcanoes in Cerro Prieto, and the thermal waters, waterfalls and palm trees of the Guadalupe Canyon are well worth a visit.
La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, is home to four universities, as well as a plethora of theatres and museums. The town is a real paradise surrounded by hot deserts and cool ocean waters and is popular with scuba divers and sports fishermen.
