Assen is a city that is located in the Drenthe province in northeast Netherlands. It is also the capital of the province. The Camp Westerbork Memorial Centre is dedicated to all of the people who past away during the years of 1942 to 1945 when the area was used for a transit camp for Jewish refugees who were exiled from the Netherlands. Camp Westerbork has been partly rebuilt, and the purpose of the museum is to give a historic overview of the site using maps, paintings, photographs, videotapes, and books. Some of the books have a recording of the names of more than 140,000 Dutchmen that were killed during the Second World War.

Another museum to see is the Drents Museum, which is not just in one building. It is a cluster of many old homes in a small village square in Assen. The museum teaches about the history of the province and has some exhibits that are interesting. One of the exhibits is a variety of prehistoric bodies that are of early settlers who built the megalithic tombs on the ridge of Hondsrug, which are called the hunebeds. You will also get to see the Pesse Canoe from 6800 BC, which is the oldest watercraft that has ever been found.
