Amsterdam Zuidoost is a borough in Amsterdam that has 4 residential areas (Driemond, Gaasperdam, Venserpolder, and Bijlmermeer) and a business park that has a recreational area called ArenA Boulevard. It is also an exclave of Amsterdam, because it does not directly border another borough in the city.

The residential area of Bijlmermeer was thought to be a town of the future and was built on the principles of Le Corbusier who was a Swiss architect. They planned to build 18,000 houses where 13,000 of them were made as flats. In 1963, the construction began in the town, and in 1968, Hoogoord was completed, which was the name of the first apartment block. Then by 1975 all of the 13,000 flats were completed. The first metroline of Amsterdam was opened in 1977 where it connects the Central Station and the city center with Zuidoost. The railway station here is called the Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA, and it has 8 tracks and 5 platforms.

An Israeli El Al airplane crashed into the town in 1992, creating a disaster in the heart of Bijlmermeer. The disaster is called Bijlmerramp, and there were 43 people killed, which includes the pilots. They made a memorial for the crash site, and it may be something that you would want to go see on a holiday.
