Canterbury is one of England’s most historic cities and boasts the spectacular Canterbury Cathedral, bastion of the Church of England and fantastically eclectic in architectural styles. The city also boasts a walled old town center, brimming with quaint historic buildings. Kent’s other main city is Rochester, home to Charles Dickens and featuring an authentic Norman castle and cathedral, as well as other relics from the city’s Norman past. Nearby is the historic port of Chatham.
On the coast lies Dover, England’s principal Channel Port, with its famous White Cliffs and renowned Dover Castle, which affords stunning views across the English Channel to the coast of France. Along Kent’s northern coast are the picturesque towns of Sandwich, known worldwide for its association with the popular culinary snack, Deal, and Walmer, the latter two of which boast charming castles and pleasant resorts. Other principal resort towns along this section of the coast include Whitstable, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate.
Kent’s main entertainment and relaxation destination is the resort town of Margate, popular with holidaymakers for more than two hundred years. The town features a small, beautiful beach, around which have sprung up an assortment of amusement attractions, cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs, all of which combine to make a stay in Margate exciting for visitors of all ages. Kent’s resort areas and major cities and towns have ample quality accommodation and excellent restaurants.
For a pleasant diversion from the often crowded tourist haunts, head for Kent’s hinterland and southern coast. Further west lies Sussex and more picturesque English coastline and countryside.
