Budget carrier easyJet scooped up the number one spot in the latest Skyscanner awards for best value-for-money short-haul airlines. easyJet took pole position in the 20 airlines assessed with flights to and from the UK.
easyJet topped the ratings with an overall thumbs up for four key categories. For its rankings tables, Skyscanner rated airlines on ticket prices, baggage charges, how much seat charge add-ons were and the cost of wining and dining on board.
Unsurprisingly, easyJet won accolades for offering value-for-money flights. What is more of a surprise is that two out of the next four positions were snapped up by full-service airlines and not budget ones.
German budget carrier Eurowings was second. Switzerland's national carrier SWISS and and KLM tied for third place while Barcelona headquartered low-cost airline Vueling Airlines propped up the top five.
Although easyJet triumphed overall with average total flight costs, the airline did not win outright in any of the four sub-categories. Ryanair was first in the department of median round trip fares with £90.67. easyJet's average fares were more than than £20 dearer at £121.52.
In the category best value-for-money baggage charges, Eurowings won and easyJet did not even make the top five. Blue Air was top in the genre of charges for seat reservations and easyJet was third.
As full-service airlines, KLM and SWISS do not charge for in-flight food and drinks and both made the top five. easyJet did not make an appearance in the value-for-money on-board catering listings.
