Tom Cruise's latest movie, entitled Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, beat Daniel Craig's latest effort The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with regards to topping the UK box office.
The fourth chapter of the Mission Impossible saga managed to take £8.1m over its opening weekend. The Girl With Dragon Tattoo, a remake of the hit Swedish thriller directed by the man behind Se7en and Fight Club, David Fincher, took almost half at £4.3m. In comparison, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows took £2.5m.
Last week's chart topper, Arthur Christmas, dropped to number seven. The festive film is the fourth animated feature to appear in this week's top 10 this week given that Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, number four, and Puss In Boots, number five, also featured and were joined by Happy Feet Two, which came ninth.
In number six this week is the critically panned movie with an all-star cast that includes the likes of screen legend Robert De Niro and pin-up Halle Berry - New Year's Eve. Hugo, based on The Invention of Hugo Cabret, a novel by Brian Selznick, and directed by Martin Scorsese, took eighth. Rounding off the top 10 was Don 2 – the Indian action film.
