We’ve put together 10 great tips on how to make sure you don’t feel ripped off when booking and picking up your car hire.
1. BOOK EARLY
Sounds obvious but if you book your actual holiday 6 months in advance then book your car hire at the same time, you can save hundreds in some cases.
2.MAKE SURE YOU SHOP AROUND
Don’t spend hour’s online comparing 9 separate companies when a comparison site can do this for you in a fraction of the time.
3.AIRPORT PICK UPvOFF SITE PICK UP?
Some of the cheaper options will be off site and require you to take a shuttle bus. But look further afield too. Maybe a 30 euro taxi ride might be able to save £20 a day on your car hire, definitely worth a look.
4.WHERE TO BUYEXCESS INSURANCE
Get excess insurance sorted when you book the car hire, it’s always the cheaper option. Buying excess cover at the time of making your booking can save up to 60% compared to buying it at the rental desk.
5.CHECK YOUR FUEL POLICY!
Some companies can make money back by applying the fuel policy ‘Pick up full, return empty’. If you’re not going to use the car other than to and from the airport then the best policy could be ‘Pick up full, return full’, petrol stations on the airport or close by will always be more expensive so be careful where you top up.
6.DO YOU WANT ADDITIONAL DRIVERS ON THE BOOKING?
If you do then shop around again as some rental companies offer them for free! Just check when you’re searching, that can save you as much as £27!
7.DO I NEED CHILD SEATS?
Most countries require children up to 3 to be in a secure child seat and sometimes a booster up to 12 years old. Check the supplier T&Cs and prices. It’s also worth checking the airport that you’re travelling to as some have a hire shop on site, or you can purchase bubble bum inflatable booster seats which are easy to pack, perfect if you travel a lot.
8.ARE YOU PLANNING A ROAD TRIP?
Then check your booking is unlimited mileage. The last thing you want is to return the car and be stung because you went the scenic route!
9.DO I HAVE TO PAY OUT OF HOURS FEES?
Most desks aren’t usually manned 24 hours a day. Your booking voucher will advise you what the opening hours are and how much the fee will be. ALWAYS make sure you enter your flight if you’re flying into an airport so they can keep an eye on your flight times.
10.CHECK THE CONDITION OF THE CAR.
Check over the car carefully before you drive off and point any problems out to the Assistant and make sure they write EVERYTHING down. If necessary take date stamped photos for proof. Do the same when you return the car and keep all the paperwork they give you as your proof.
