Explore Stockholm
Kungliga Slottet is the chief historical attraction in Stockholm. It’s the world’s largest royal castle still in use, and has more than 600 rooms, dating mostly from the late 17th century. Be sure to visit the impressive Hall of State, the Apartments of the Royal Orders of Chivalry, and the Royal Treasury, which has an amazing display. Inside the Museum Tre Kronor you can see remains of the original 13th century castle. The Stadshuset (town hall) is another important and impressive building in the city.
History is well preserved in Stockholm and seen best at the remarkable Skansen open-air museum atop a hill in Djurgården. It has been open to the public for over hundred years, with a display of ancient traditional houses, a working village centre, cultural performances, a handicraft workshop and even a zoo.
Wandering around the old town and among the parks and small islands is the best way to truly appreciate the atmosphere in Stockholm, and its easy-going people. Haga Park is particularly popular, with its museums, neo-classic Paviljong, Butterfly house, and pleasant cycling and walking trails.
Transport
By air
Stockholm is a little out of the way, and visitors from outside of Europe may find it easier to arrive via Frankfurt, Amsterdam or London. The city’s Arlanda International Airport is 42kms north of the city and mostly services regional flights, with several flights a day to Helsinki, Oslo, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, as well as regular flights to all major European cities. SAS, the national carrier does fly several trans-Atlantic routes, along with other selected airlines, and there are limited flights to Asian destinations. Connections to Scandinavian destinations are numerous.
From the airport there are regular buses and shuttles to the city centre. Car hire in Stockholm Airport is available from leading suppliers Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Budget.
By train
Stockholm is a rail hub for Sweden’s SJ national service, and trains run from the Centralstationen to Copenhagen, Osla, Storlien (for Trondheim) and Narvik.
By bus
Several bus companies run a national network and the Cityterminalen is next to the Centralstationen. There are regular services to points all over Sweden, Norway and Finland, but concentrated more in the south. Long distance buses travel via ferry to cities all over Europe.
By boat
Ferries operated by Silja Line run from Värtahamnen to Turku and Helsinki. Viking Line ferries operate from Tegelvikshamn to Turku and Helsinki.
