Containing 45,000 residents, Rye is a small city in New York state that is becoming popular with tourists. It mainly serves as a base for those tourists who have arranged car hire and plan to take regular trips to New York City and its suburbs, or elsewhere along the iconic Eastern Seaboard which features the New England area and cities such as Boston.

While Rye Ford Inc is the only car hire agency in Rye, there are other options nearby in surrounding towns. Close-by options include Hertz and Enterprise in Port Chester, and Toyota and Enterprise in Greenwich, both of which are within reachable distance of Rye. Booking online can secure cheaper rates than those on arrival.

Best Time to Go
Rye is best visited from June to September, as this is when the east coast generally experiences its summer. Although the area may be crowded at this time as the school holidays will be in full swing, car hire rates aren't likely to jump. Rye is also pleasant in the autumn, which generally lasts from September to late November.

Driving
Despite its population, finding parking or encountering traffic around Rye are never problems in this small town. Due to the amount of commuters however, roads such as the Interstate 95 and the New England Thruway become congested during rush hours and at weekends, particularly on Sundays from September to late December when the two New York NFL teams have games on a regular basis.

As a small town, Rye is without such luxuries as its own internal rail or metro systems. Tourists without their own transportation must rely on buses or taxis to get around, with some services seasonable.

Trains
Rye is without its own rail system. As this is a commuter town, however, New York's MTA provides rail transport to and from New York City's Grand Central Station, Stamford and New Haven's Union Station.

Buses
Services such as the 61 and the 76 transport tourists around Rye. Seasonal routes such as the 75, the 91 and the 92 also run at certain points of the year and, like the 61 and the 76, are provided by Bee-Line Bus. Typical fares run at around £1 per person, per journey.

Taxis
Taxi-Time is the main supplier of taxis in the Rye area. Cabs with this company can be pre-arranged by calling the toll-free number provided. Typical fares around town, to key destinations such as King Street, Westchester Avenue and Bowman Avenue, cost between £5 and £10 from most hotels in the city. Trips into New York aren't cheap, at roughly £50.

Situated in a part of the country that is often regarded as being the suburbs of New York City, Rye is conveniently placed for taking regular trips to and from one of the planet's best-known tourist havens. With personal transportation, jaunts around the New England area, which includes Boston, are a possibility and visiting the area during the summer means the region’s beach towns will be in full swing.

New York City – The heart of the Big Apple, where major draws such as the Empire State Building await, can be reached by completing a mere 25 mile journey that usually takes less than 40 minutes in good traffic conditions.

Boston – Heading east out of Boston and then north past Stamford, New Haven and Hartford has drivers eventually connecting to the Interstate 290 that links this area to Boston. Massachusetts's biggest city is known for its sports teams and world-renowned colleges.

Philadelphia – Those that head further south of New York must stay on the road for an additional 1 hour and 30 minutes if they wish to visit the City of Brotherly Love. As the US's first capital city, it is steeped in history and is loved by fans of the Rocky series.
