Markt Schwaben dates back to the 11th century. In 1340, the town of Schwaben was granted rights to hold a market by Duke Rudolf, and the name stuck. A castle was constructed during the thirteenth century on the hill, as back then the border between Lower and Upper Bavaria ran to the northeast of the town. The castle was destroyed many times, until finally a castle was constructed in 1650 and the south wing remains today as part of the Town Hall. The old castle moat can also still be seen.

Markt Schwaben, like many other old German towns, has several churches that are a must see during your holiday. One such church dates back to the early 1300s, and another - Saint Margaret's - in 1474. In 1674 building began on a new church, Saint Margaret's.
