Guide

Manitoba has the same gushing rivers, wild moose and agricultural flatland as many other Canadian provinces, but this doesn’t mean visitors can’t have a truly unique experience in this little visited part of Canada. This Prairies province bordering Ontario, Saskatchewan and the US has Winnipeg as its capital, but some of the best drives are had in the Interlake region, while wildlife encounters at Riding Mountain National Park are hard to beat.

Hiring a Vehicle

Dollar, Hertz and National are among the suppliers represented at Winnipeg’s airport and at major cities throughout Manitoba, such as Brandon, Thompson and Churchill. Compare car hire before you leave home to locate the best offer.

Transport Options

Winnipeg’s international airport is the main entry point, while domestic air services operate from airports serving lesser Manitoba cities. Winnipeg is, likewise, the rail hub of the province, with train services stopping at just five other Manitoba locations. Greyhound bus coverage is wider but car hire in Manitoba is the best way to traverse the province. Ottawa and Regina are connected to the province by Highway 1, while Highway 75 connects with the US border.

Car Hire Driving Tips in Manitoba

The most convenient way to get around the province is with car rental in Manitoba. The Trans Canada Highway offers four, fast-moving lanes. Avoid driving in Winnipeg during morning and evening rush hours. Left-hand turns are prohibited at many busy junctions so be sure to check signage. Some roads in Riding Mountain National Park close in winter.

Not to be Missed!

Interlake, to the north of Winnipeg, offers some of the province’s most spectacular beaches and lakes where fishing, boating and swimming can be enjoyed. Churchill in the north is the place to see polar bears and beluga whales, but for those not wanting to stray from the Prairies, Riding Mountain National Park is home to moose, otter and lynx.

Weather & Tourist Seasons

The province’s continental climate means bitter winters in the north but less extreme winter weather in the likes of Winnipeg, which nevertheless sees frequent winter blizzards. Tornadoes affect the south in summer, when temperatures in this part of Manitoba can reach in excess of 30°C. Autumn (September to November) is the best time to spot polar bears in Churchill while beluga whales make an appearance in summer. Most other parts of the province are best visited in the warm summer months (June through August).
