Car Hire

Visitors to the Greek island of Kefalonia will arrive at Kefalonia Airport, which is located around five miles from the island capital of Argostoli. Many flights which land here are charters from Athens; however, the airport also receives a number of flights from mainland Europe. The airport is only a short drive from the capital and a quick, scenic ride to a number of other tourist destinations on the island.

Who to Book With
There are a number of car rental companies found within Kefalonia Airport, such as Hertz, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, National, Sixt and Alamo. All rental companies supply a wide array of vehicles which can be rented either on the day or pre-booked online.

In order to collect a pre-booked vehicle, you must supply the following documents:

- Both sections of a valid driver’s licence
- The credit card used when completing the booking
- Your passport
- A utility bill as proof of address
- The booking confirmation email

Driving
Driving in Greece is on the right, while overtaking is on the left. Driving defensively is advisable in Greece as local drivers often drive dangerously. The highways are well maintained and there is a clear distinction between lanes. The fast lane should never be obstructed and the middle lane is always used for overtaking. Outside of the main cities, roads can be slightly more careworn. A road map is useful as not all roads are signposted. Many petrol stations close on Sunday, although by law one must be open on Sunday in each area. Heavy fines are enforced for drivers who run red lights, cross double white lines or do not stop at stop signs.

Transport

The airport is poorly serviced by public transport. There is no train station or bus terminal at the airport, meaning those who opt not to hire a vehicle will be left with taxis as their only transport option.

Taxis
As there is no train or bus service linking the airport with the surrounding areas, taxis are the only option for those who do not opt to self-drive. The taxi rank is located outside of the main terminal. Although some taxis have meters, it is best to agree a price with the driver beforehand.

Buses
There are no bus services linking Kefalonia Airport with the rest of the island. However, Argostoli bus station is only a short ride away by taxi, as is Fiskardo bus station. From these stations, a number of buses run to popular destinations across the island. Tourists should be aware that services are infrequent and stops are limited. Facilities

Terminals
Kefalonia Airport is small for an international airport, but the one terminal adequately serves outgoing and incoming flights from across Europe. There are flights every hour to Athens. There are three check-in desks and two baggage claim belts. Flights arrive daily during the summer with airlines such as EasyJet and Thomas Cook.

Parking
There is a small car park directly outside of the terminal, only a short walk from the main entrance. This car park is used for both long stays and short stays, and charges are applied by the hour. There is no discount for long stays. There are a number of ticket machines where payment can be made as you exit the car park.

Wi-Fi
There is no Wi-Fi within the airport.

Information Services
There is a small information desk in the Arrivals hall, which is found in the centre of the terminal. Here, visitors can get information about local events and sights, arrivals and departures, as well as help with hotel reservations. It is also possible to report lost luggage or other airport-related issues at this desk.

Accessibility
The airport is reasonably small and easy to get around, having been adapted for those with reduced mobility. There are a number or disabled persons’ parking spaces in front of the terminal, along with disabled persons’ bathroom facilities in both Arrivals and Departures. Those requiring further assistance can contact the information desk.

Restaurants and Bars
Although there is no main restaurant, there are a handful of cafés within the terminal for passengers wanting to purchase hot and cold sandwiches, along with confectioneries and crisps. Most cafés serve alcohol, particularly local brands. There is also a small newsagent where customers can purchase a quick bite to eat.

VIP Lounges
There is no VIP lounge at Kefalonia Airport.

Money and ATMs
There are a number of ATMs in Arrivals and Departures and next to the information desk. The airport also has a currency exchange facility which can exchange pounds sterling into euro and vice versa. Further to this, there is a post office which offers a number of other currency services.

Shopping
There are no major brands represented at the airport; however, there is a small duty-free section where customers can purchase duty-free alcohol and perfume along with tobacco, confectioneries and local produce.
