Car Hire

Innsbruck Airport is Austria’s Tyrol region’s largest airport, and is at its busiest during the winter sports season. Surrounded by towering mountains, it’s subject to freezing weather conditions, but manages to cope on most occasions. The facility lies just over two miles west of Innsbruck’s central district, which is linked to the airport by bus, taxi and rental cars which are available on the complex. Self-drive to the city is easily achieved by following signs to the A12 motorway and the city from the complex, and is one of the most convenient means of transport for visitors to the nearby ski resorts.

Who to Book With
Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget and Austrian car rental company Megadrive all have offices at the airport, either on the main hall’s upper floor or on the multi-storey car park’s ground floor. Cars are collected from the multi-storey car park, accessed by a covered walkway from the terminal which protects passengers from the Alpine winter weather.

Driving
Austria drives on the right, with most fast roads and motorways in the region subject to taxes and requiring a vignette sticker which needs to be affixed to the windscreen. Stickers valid for 10 days, two months or longer can be purchased at petrol stations. Speed limits are rigorously enforced, with motorway limits fixed at 80mph, clearways at 62mph and urban roads at 31mph. Seatbelts are compulsory for all occupants, mobile phone usage is only permitted via a hands-free kit and warning triangles and visibility vests must be carried. Winter tyres and snow chains are compulsory during the winter season. Street-side parking in Innsbruck is mostly short-term using ticket machines, but the city has a number of expensive long-term car parks. Most petrol stations in Austria take card payments.

Transport

Ground transportation from Innsbruck Airport to the city is by a single bus line, taxi or self-drive. There is no rail link, although the city itself has surprisingly good rail links to major neighbouring towns. Generally, buses are the cheapest form of travel but self-drive is the most convenient as it avoids the use of expensive taxis and doesn’t restrict travellers to fixed timetables.

Taxis
Metered taxis are found at the rank opposite the terminal and are far less expensive over short distances than booking an airport transfer online. The inner city zone rate is fixed at an initial charge of around £4.50, including the first 0.8 mile, with every 0.8 mile up to 2.5 miles thereafter charged at £1.50. Fixed rates reduce slightly on long journeys and the night-time rate between 22:00 and 06:00 sees a price increase of around one-third.

Buses
Innsbruck Airport links with the city centre via bus line F from a stop at the front of the terminal’s Arrivals area. Provider IVB has timetables which vary according to the season, with the most frequent services running in winter every 15 minutes. The journey, terminating at the city’s main rail station, takes around 20 minutes, dependent on traffic conditions, and costs about £1.50. Innsbruck itself has a comprehensive bus network as well as four tram lines. Shared shuttle buses operate from the airport to the ski resorts.

Facilities

Terminals
Innsbruck’s single terminal is at its busiest at the height of the ski season, as literally dozens of popular ski resorts are within three hours’ drive of the complex. Almost a million passengers pass through its doors annually, with the majority arriving between December and March. Carriers offering routes from the UK include British Airways, Austrian Airlines, EasyJet, Flybe, Monarch, Thomas Cook and Thomson.

Parking
The complex’s multi-storey car park is located close to the terminal and offers 750 spaces, including entrance-level, specially-marked illuminated bays reserved for women drivers. Payment is by credit card at one of five machines, and open-air car parks P1, P2, P5 and P7 are located a short distance from the terminal. Pick ups and drop offs are free, and car park charges start at around £1.50 an hour up to a maximum of about £10 per day. Subsequent days are charged at around £8 per day, with a maximum of £60 per week.

Accessibility
Designated parking areas, wheelchair accessibility to and around the terminal, lifts, special seating areas and adapted toilets are available to passengers with reduced mobility. Airport personnel are trained to help disabled passengers. For boarding or deplaning assistance, the traveller’s airline should be notified.

Restaurants and Bars
There are several café-bars and one restaurant at Innsbruck Airport’s terminal, in addition to the Ruetz bakery with its fresh bread and snacks. Reutz and Café Testa Rossa are found in the public areas, and FlyInn’s Eurest diner and its new Accademia del Caffe bar are found in the Departures lounge.

VIP Lounges
There are no VIP lounges at Innsbruck Airport.

Money and ATMs
There is one ATM in the Arrivals hall. Currency exchange is not available.

Shopping
Innsbruck Airport offers three shopping venues. The Airport Shop in the public area sells newspapers, magazines, books, travel accessories, gifts, souvenirs and tobacco products. In the Departures lounge are a duty-free store and a Travel Value shop offering tax-free prices on cosmetics, wine, spirits, perfume and cosmetics. However, tobacco products here are not duty-free.
