Today, Halifax is better-known for its warm hospitality, gourmet dining and its decadent and well-preserved Georgian architecture. Culture is triumphant in Halifax, with many visitors coming to take in a show at the town’s historic Victorian Theatre. Kids simply love this place too, since it is the home of the National Children’s Museum. Driving around Halifax and the rest of West Yorkshire is a pleasure; the town is just 30 minutes away from Leeds and 45 minutes away from Manchester using the M62 motorway.

Driving
Driving around Halifax is made particularly easy thanks to the well-built system of main roads that spider out of the town centre. If heading east or west, join the A58, while for north or south routes, join the A629. Both of these roads meet up with the M62 motorway, which is less than 10 miles away, no matter which direction you go in.

There are a few places to park in Halifax, so you should have no trouble finding a spot. Bull Green car park is the closest to the Victoria Theatre, while the High Street car park is just a few minutes’ walk away. Both are managed by the council. The rate is usually 70p per hour, although Sundays are free.

Transport

Being close to the big city of Leeds, Halifax is well connected to other nearby places in Yorkshire. It is also possible to travel to destinations farther afield; you can reach Manchester in under an hour using the national rail network. Taxis are also an option in Halifax, with several mini-cab firms operating around the town.

Trains
Halifax has a useful train line that connects to Manchester, Leeds, York, Blackpool and Huddersfield. The direct route to Manchester takes around 50 minutes, while the journey to Leeds takes around 40 minutes. You can check National Rail Enquiries for up-to-date timetables.

Taxis

Buses
Most buses in Halifax are operated by First Calderdale & Huddersfield, connecting the town up to other places in Yorkshire and beyond. You can get to Leeds on the 503, 508 and 576 buses, which run every 10-20 minutes. To get to Rochdale and other places west of Halifax, catch the 528. You check out route maps on the Metro website.

Recommended Drives

Yorkshire Dales - Think of Yorkshire, and many think of the wide open space that is the Dales. Fortunately, Halifax is just an hour’s drive away. Head up the A269 towards Grassington and join the B6265. You can return on the B6160 for a round-trip.

Peak District National Park - Just 45 minutes south of Halifax. Follow the A269 southwards and cross over the M62 motorway. If you choose to, you can delve deeper into the park by driving another 45 minutes south.

York - Make the most of the extremely good road network in Yorkshire with a daytrip to the historic city of York, just an hour away. Take the M62 east, continue onto the M1, turn of at the A64 and you’re there!

If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
