Chesterfield Guide

Car Hire

Unmistakable thanks to its iconic crooked spire, Chesterfield is a throwback of a classic old English market town and has successfully managed to retain its charm over the years. While there are attractions and activities to keep tourists occupied in town, many use car hire to visit the surrounding areas of stunning countryside, such as the Peak District, or the other northern towns nearby, including Sheffield.

Who to Book With
Sixt and Enterprise are the two best-known companies that offer car rental in Chesterfield. They accept online bookings, which usually result in cheaper rates than turning up in-person and making a reservation. Other firms include Practical Car & Rental and GK Ford.

Best Time to go
Chesterfield can be visited anytime of the year, given that most of its attractions are in the town centre or located indoors. Those that would prefer the most pleasant climate for visiting Chesterfield and hiking around the Peak District may wish to arrive between June and August, the English summertime, although it is generally advised to make hire vehicle and accommodation bookings well in advance during this time.

Need to Know Essentials
The following must be shown to collect a rental car:

- Full and valid UK driving license
- Second form of ID
- Credit card used to complete the booking
- Printed confirmation of rental or another form of proof

Driving
Driving around Chesterfield isn't a problem, even during rush hours. Parking spaces are usually not difficult to find either, given the amount of lots scattered around the town centre that charge fair prices to leave a vehicle for a few hours. Additionally, there are some parking spaces provided by the council on the town centre streets, although these do fill up quickly.

See our guide to the UK for more information on driving in this country.

Transport

As Chesterfield is a small market town, the public transport network isn't as developed as in other destinations, making car rental almost a necessity, especially for trips to the Peak District. Transport other than a hire vehicle is mainly limited to buses and taxis.

Trains
Chesterfield is without an internal rail network, but there are plenty of train links in and out of the town. It is easiest to travel to and from Sheffield and Derby, but other options include Manchester, London and Leicester. The local train to the Peak District can be caught by first heading to Sheffield. These services are mostly supplied by East Midlands Trains and Northern Rail.

Taxis
Club Taxis is the main taxi company in Chesterfield, although it is rivalled by the likes of Galaxy Travel, Ports 'n' all, A Line Taxis and Central Cars. While fares might have to be agreed for trips out of the town centre, the meter will most probably be used for travelling around Chesterfield and its immediate surroundings.

Buses
Stagecoach is the main provider of bus travel in Chesterfield, with unlimited travel through the town and its suburbs costing around £3 per day. Stagecoach also offers express services to other cities, such as Sheffield, in this particular corner of the country.

Exploring

As it was constructed on an Ancient Roman fort, Chesterfield boasts plenty of history within its confines. While here, tourists can pay visits to the Our Lady and All Saints Church, known for its unique crooked spire, and enjoy time in the Shambles area of the town, which is laden with shopping options and classic tearooms. Although not everyone may wish to drink there, the Royal Oak is worth a visit simply for having been in town since 1772. There are also plenty of great daytrips that can be taken from Chesterfield.

Recommended Drives

The Peak District - This is one of England's most famous outdoor areas and is only a short, pleasant cruise from the centre of Chesterfield. Hiking is the main activity here. After completing a long walk, many parties opt for a classic English pub meal at the many watering holes in quaint villages that are scattered across the area.

Sheffield - Located only a half-hour journey from Chesterfield when heading north on the A61. The two cities are friendly rivals. In the Steel City, as Sheffield is known, tourists can enjoy fine dining along West Street, shopping on Fargate and relaxing in any one of the numerous parks that make Sheffield one of England's greenest cities.

Derby - This is the largest town in Chesterfield's county of Derbyshire. Here, visitors enjoy trips to the theatre, Picksfords House and the Arboretum, England's first-ever public park.
