While the summer holidays might be coming to an end, there is still time for a well-earned break. However, with recent travel companies going into administration, it’s worthwhile making sure you’re covered for any eventualities before departing.

It’s important to remember that the level of protection you have varies depending on whether you book a package holiday or only elements, such as flights

For package holidays make sure you book with an ATOL protected tour operator, as you are then covered for flights and accommodation. If you’re abroad on a package holiday and your airline fails, your tour operator will take care of you at no extra expense. If an airline fails before you travel, your tour operator must offer a replacement holiday or a refund. To check if a company is ATOL protected visit the Civil Aviation Authority website

If you book your accommodation and flights separately you need to protect yourself by purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance policy. To ensure you are covered if your airline goes bust check that ‘scheduled airline failure insurance’ (SAFI) in included in your policy. The cover guarantees that a refund of the ticket cost will be provided in the event that the airline suffers financial failure before you travel and will cover holidaymakers for the cost of a return ticket if you are outside of the UK at the time.
