Here’s a common problem faced by many people during summer breaks, holidays or if you need a car while your vehicle is being repaired. The first thing you need to focus on is, what company can offer you not only the kind of vehicle you need, but at the same time not rip you off.

Choosing a company can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make it. Renting a vehicle in advanced will help you, doing this may also save you a bit of money. Whether you chose to browse the Internet, browse magazines or talk to people, taking your time will keep you from choosing either the wrong vehicle or company. If you have rented a car in advance, there is always a chance to change the vehicle, if you have changed your mind.

Even though hiring a vehicle can drive you crazy, as seen in the hit film Plaines, Trains and Automobiles. It can ruin a holiday if you become stressed, put the bad rental experience behind you and move on, who knows, this may lead to a better company or if your very unlucky a worse company.

When you go to hire a vehicle, take a long search of as many different companies as possible will prove beneficial. Use sites such as carrentals.co.uk to compare many different car rental companies at the same time, remember, rent a car in advance, don’t stress out and most importantly enjoy the experience.

How easy can it be to obtain cheaper car hire rates, well that depends on the individual company. Due to the recession most companies increased their prices, this lead to a downfall in rentals, reasons behind this were, the companies couldn’t afford to purchase newer vehicles. Luckily people who pre-book a vehicle, maybe around 2-3 months in advance, could evade the prices during peak times. Of course the simplest way to avoid the charges in to rely purely on public transport, bikes or walking, this option will often complicate getting around a city.

When browsing through various websites, checking at different times of the year can lead to cheaper car rentals. If you have a holiday booked next year, planning as far as 8 months in advanced can lead to a very cheap rental vehicle. Looking at a larger vehicle has its advantages, sure you will be driving around in a vehicle that has more room than you necessarily need, but this can provide you with a better deal. You may be asking your, how does that work, well the majority of people will go for a smaller vehicle, as they provide all the space they need. If you are willing to go for a larger vehicle, not only could the vehicle cost the same as a smaller vehicle, you may even save yourself a small amount of money.

If taking young children on holiday with you, taking your own accessories such as child seats can save money, but you will get charged when going through customs. A great solution to this problem, would be to invest in an inflatable chair that you can carry with you, these take up a small amount of space and are extremely versatile, you could also you these as a seat when sitting outside.

Hilton Points are the equivalent of air miles, except you earn them by renting cars instead of flying in planes. You may ask yourself what use are these points. Well they give you access to air miles. The question you have to ask yourself is, would it be worth collecting these.

Earning Hilton points may be easier for people who spend a lot of money renting cars, but that shouldn’t put people off who only rent a car maybe once a year, or only on holidays. Anyone can instantly sign up and start collecting points. The great thing is the Hilton AmEx card is completely free and gives you access to promotional offers. It can take a long time to earn these points and have access to different promotions, but there is no obligation to earn a specific amount per year, simply collect as you go and turn the points into free hotel reservations.

Lots of car rental companies offer points plus money off when hiring vehicles, simply quote your card number and not only are you saving a fair amount of money, but you also gain points. The main purpose of these points is to either save money on a reserved room in a Hilton hotel, or if enough points have been collected and saved, a completely free room. Rooms have to be reserved in order for you to get money off, if you walk into a hotel, they won’t allow you to use your points.

Happy collecting.

When planning your holiday, the first thing you normally look into is car hire, then, how you will get to your holiday destination, lets say Brooklyn, what’s to say you cant land in another part of America and travel there via your own route. Most people would take the quickest route possible, but travelling via your own route can make your arrival more memorable.

Planning a holiday like this, would work much better during the day, as you could explore each part of the city and take in the sites. The benefit of renting a car, is that you won’t have to rely on public transport as your main way to get around. After landing at an airport in America, people have either decided to hire a car or use public transport.

When you have collected you hired vehicle, you are free to explore the wonderful sites of America, no tedious train or taxi rides, simply get in he car and drive. Driving through places like Manhattan and crossing the Brooklyn Bridge are much more exciting when you’re the one driving.

Driving through Manhattan is a magical and memorable experience, not to mention, since your in your own car, stopping to get something to eat or go inside one of the many famous buildings is something you’ll never forget.

New York has one of the most famous parks in the world, why not take a trip to Central Park and just relax after the long flight, just listening to the birds while enjoying a nice picnic or maybe play some sports. Even after doing this in your first day, New York still has plenty to offer, it can take weeks to truly see everything, including the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero, not to mention all the exciting foods you will eat.

When it comes to renting a vehicle, not only do you want a reliable company but also reasonable prices. Some people believe that, the more you spend, the better the service, this isn’t always the case. People, who spend around a $100 dollars to rent a vehicle, could experience a service just as good, if not better than someone who has spent around $1000 dollars.

If you are looking for a very cheap deal, websites such as Carrentals and Lastminute can provide some amazing and very cheap deals from reliable companies. Sometimes its better to wait to find a deal, if your in desperate need of a rental vehicle, companies often advertise deals such as, 70% of when booked within a short period of time.

Some companies can offer a free additional driver deal, so both you and another driver can share the driving whilst only paying the one driver, this works out great, especially if you plan to drive long distances. Knowing you can share the driving with another person can take the strain off you, plus knowing you can hand the vehicle over to another driver without worrying about the insurance can enhance both of your holiday experiences.

There are downsides to renting a cheaper vehicle. Hidden fees, cars that haven’t been serviced regularly and a low range of vehicles, can all lead to a bad experience. Looking in magazines and the Internet can help you find reviews for specific rental companies. When it comes to defining cheap deals on rentals cars, many factors are taken into consideration. If your budget is high, a vehicle that cost around $500 dollars may seem like a cheap deal, but to people with a low to mid range budget, would prefer a vehicle that costs $200 or less.

When it comes to choosing the right car rental firm, it can be very difficult to find a firm that matches any requirements you have. Most car rental firms have set up firms in many different countries. This is one less thing to worry about and makes life slightly easier when looking at different firms.

When deciding on a company, certain things should be taken into consideration, for example if you have young children, access to child seats is vital. Companies such as Hertz and Avis are a very popular choice as they both provide rental services in countries such as the UK, Spain, Turkey, Portugal and Thailand. Reading reviews in magazines or the Internet can give you a better insight of what the company is like, asking relatives and friends can also help, and after all they are the people who will give you an honest opinion.

Comparator websites such as carrentals.co.uk are extremely useful for going through lists and lists of website deals. Simply enter your details such as location and the date you want to collect the rental car, then with a simple click you are greeted with a list or 50 websites to conveniently browse through. This is possibly the easiest way to find the best deal for you.

A wide range of vehicles and extras is very important, for most people, extras such as Satellite Navigation units and maybe mp3 compatible stereos can mean a lot to certain people. If you plan on camping out in the wilderness, the option to add a roof rack to a rugged vehicle such as a Range Rover, to carry all of your camping equipment. If your planning on a sports holiday, especially surfing, being able to add a surf rack to thee rental vehicle would be a great help.

At the end of the day it will be entirely up to the individual needs your require, people can advise, but its up to you to make the final decision.

The most obvious answer to this question would be a snow plow, thought a snow plow would without doubt be the best option, it’s not a practical solution for everyone to run out and buy one. Could you imagine main roads being jammed with nothing but snow plows.

A more suitable solution would be a powerful and sturdy 4×4 vehicle such a Humvee or a Land Rover. Thought these would be the easiest to control on snowy road, this is not a cheap or practical option for everyone. Another option would be a very reliable front-wheel drive vehicle, here are some of the most popular vehicles, the Subaru Outback, Volvo XC90, Volkswagen Touareg, Ford Taurus X and Hyundai Santa Fe. If your vehicle has been taken care of and has experienced no serious issues, most vehicles will be able to travel with relative safety in winter conditions.

The Toyota Hilux would be an awesome choice, for any fan of the BBC series Top Gear, you may remember an episode where they all tried to destroy one. No matter what they did to this monster of a pick up truck, they just couldn’t get it to stop running, even with the most basic of tools, they still managed to get it running again.

Before setting out on a long journey, it could be a good idea to store some vital items in your vehicle. Water, basic food and blankets, especially important if you have younger children traveling with you. These items would be very useful if anything bad happened such as your vehicle breaking down. A source of light kept in your glove box or in the boot of your car, would help you not only see, but also alert any other drivers to your presence whilst walking to an emergency phone or a service station.

There are a variety of options available to help your everyday car travel on snow or even ice covered roads. A cheap option would be to wrap chains around your tires, this will provide you with a bit more grip on icy roads. More expensive options are available including snow tires. These replace your all-weather tires with more traction and metal studs to dig into the snow and ice.

Adding extra weight to your vehicle, could help you gain control of your vehicle if you begin to lose control. The extra weight will help push your car closer to the road, helping more of the tire traction to grip the road. This won’t be as necessary if you have replaced your tires with snow tires or have wrapped them with chains.

As with all driving be safe and don’t rush.

With people realizing the damage cars are causing to the planet, more and more people have turned to hybrid cars to reduce their CO2 emissions. With petrol and diesel-powered, stylish cars being first choice for many people, similarly styled hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius have become popular with those wanting to cut down on their CO2 emissions.

When it comes to hiring cars, more companies are offering green cars as an option. Hertz, Green Motion and Green n Groovy all offer green cars to rent. While there are positive sides to renting a hybrid car, there are also negative points. Driving around in a hybrid car, you know the amount of fumes the car is producing is far less than a petrol car. However, you can also expect to pay more. Having said that, paying more to rent a hybrid car will help you save money by not having to fill up the fuel tank as often thanks to the aid of an electric engine.

Renting a hybrid car can give a deeper insight into what life would actually be like if you decided to purchase one. Over the next few years hybrid cars could possibly be more popular than the much loved yet damaging petrol-powered motor, so it’s a good way to get a head start on making a choice when it comes to buying your next car.

Around the world people are looking at different ways to build more fuel-efficient vehicles by creating new fuels. Bio Diesel is made from 100% vegetable oil that goes through a process to create a cleaner-running fuel for cars. The advantage of Bio Diesel is that you can fill your car up exactly like you do now, with no fancy equipment or confusing charging methods. Bio Beetle in Hawaii offers rental cars that run purely on Bio Diesel. When bio diesel engines are built into the majority of cars during the next few years, the only thing that will change is what the fuel pumps look like. Bio diesel has also been proven to provide the same, if not a better performance than a car running on regular fuel. With a cleaner burning fuel, people driving around in a bio-diesel powered car should experience less engine troubles, which can only be a good thing. Clearly this technology is some years away from widespread adoption, but it could offer a promising alternative to our gas guzzling machines in the future.

There is also speculative talk of electric cars with magnetic chargers built underneath them and the chance of having magnetic chargers built into roads. This means you might never have to stop for petrol again. When these vehicles become available to everyone we should see magnetic chargers placed under every parking spot. In effect, the amount of money you spend on parking could be the amount you pay for the electricity to power you vehicle. The future looks bright.

You might be surprised to learn that a large percentage of nearly-new cars which you see on the forecourts of dealerships are old rental vehicles.

Car rental firms have a high turnover of vehicles. Rental companies change their cars when they are only about a year or two old, three to four at the most. They need to keep up to date with what the manufacturers are producing and people want the latest models when they turn up. They don’t want something that is five years old and has been round the clock at least once.

In addition, hire companies don’t want to keep vehicles for too long since they older they get, the more risk there is of problems developing which could result in a breakdown, which is bad for business and the company’s image. And don’t forget, it’s a competitive industry and standards are high, hence the need to always have the newest and the best in the fleet.

This means that ex-hire cars are sold at low prices when they are still only a couple of years old and in good condition, resulting in a constant supply of nearly-new, albeit high-mileage for their age, vehicles coming onto the second-hand market. This helps to drive prices down and means that there are some good bargains to be had out there.

It also explains why the re-sale value of a new car drops off so rapidly in the first two or three years – it’s because there’s a constant supply of nearly-new vehicles coming onto the market, something which upsets car manufacturers.

Some people might be initially wary of buying a car which has had numerous different drivers and might have been subjected to a fair bit of abuse. After all, no one worries as much about how they treat a hire car as they would their own.

But the converse of this is that while the car is part of a company’s fleet, it is usually well-maintained and goes through continuous comprehensive testing to keep it on the road. Again, it is not in the company’s interests to hire out poorly-maintained vehicles which are going to cause grief to their customers. All right, yes, there are plenty of examples out there which prove that last statement wrong, but I’m talking about the major players here.

And don’t forget that when you buy a used car which was privately owned, unless there’s a full service history, you have no idea of how well looked after it was and what the previous owner did or did not do to their car. If, on the other hand, the car comes from a rental company, you are at least guaranteed that it was well maintained.

When a car is retired from fleet service, it undergoes a thorough inspection and appraisal. The best cars are often kept to be sold off via the company’s own website, while the rest are sent to dealerships or to auction houses.

Some online dealers specialise in ex-hire or ex-fleet cars, so it’s not hard to find one by searching online, but you need to keep checking their sites and keep your eyes open for when cars are put on the market. If you do, you could get yourself a well-maintained nearly new car at a very competitive price.
