Plaza Santo Domingo is located in the heart of Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. Managua is located on the southwestern shores of Lake Managua and was declared the national capital of the country in 1852.
Managua is in the best position in Nicaragua to be able to reach any part of the country. All of the main roads throughout the country lead to Managua. There are four main highways that connect Managua to the rest of the country: the Pan-American Highway, the Southern Highway, the Carretera Masaya, and the new highway that connects Managua with Leon. Travel is easy on these roads because of little traffic congestion.
Public transportation is also a popular option from getting too and from the capital city. Buses are the most used form of public transportation in the country, and are used often even in small villages as well as the bigger cities. There is also taxi service and car hire service within the city. The rail system of the country in no longer in existence, and as of yet there are no plans to create trams or monorails in the city.
Managua also has the Augusto C. Andino International Airport that is the most modern airport in Central America. It is the only international airport in the country. The airport is only eight miles east of the city's downtown center where you can find restaurants and shopping centers in the Plaza Santo Domingo. Many hotels are also in the area for a convenient location to get to the great shopping areas.
