How you can reduce your C02 emissions
Around 22% of all man-made C02 emissions in the UK come from road transport.
These tips will reduce fuel use and C02 emissions.
- Choose diesel vehicles - they are up to 20% more efficient than petrol vehicles
- Avoid driving in low gears
- Regularly check tyres – soft tyres can increase your fuel bill by 8%
- Brake smoothly as hard breaking consumes more fuel
- Open windows increase fuel consumption, use air vents instead
- Never drive short journeys on a cold engine – this could use up to twice as much fuel as a warmed up engine.
- Never accelerate hard as this increases fuel consumption
- Excess weight – reduce unnecessary excess weight from your vehicle
- Use handbrake rather than holding the vehicle on the clutch
- Traffic jams - switch the engine off rather than idling in large jams
- Remember to walk or share lifts with friends where possible
- Air conditioning increases fuel consumption by 5-10% compared to windows. However when you drive over 40mph it is more economical to use air conditioning.
