You have just set foot in Zittau, is a small city in the south east of the Free State of Saxony, Germany. Although its location is on a hilly terrain and seems far out of the way which is not accessible by any Autobahn, Zittau could not deny its original beauty showing off German architecture. Zittau is home to about 29,898 residents as of 2006 records.

The city is host to the famous Italian Style town hall and the St. John church, a building of medieval heritage which is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. A three-hour guided tour which will take you through much of the city’s historical sites and significant buildings is available.

Located close to the border triangle between Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, Zittau gives you the access to cross the German border into Poland, and then cross the Polish border into the Czech Republic.

In fact, only Zittau gives you the opportunity to hop in three countries in just a few minutes. You can walk across the border by just presenting your passport to both the German and the Polish border guards and you are already in Polland. A mile’s walk in a tree-lined road will bring you to the Czech Republic, where you are again required to present your passport to the guard to gain entry into the country. Basic amenities like a currency exchange, service station and vendors selling things are on the road.

Rewinding back to 1744, Zittau enjoyed a high proportion of well-to-do citizens, hence given the special title ""Die Reiche"" which means ""the Rich"". The war in the mid-1700s though destroyed almost everything. The city also became a vital trading point for beer in the 16th century and textile in the 18th century. Zittau’s population of 63,000 before the fall of communism dropped to its present number because people migrated to the west to find jobs, abandoning their houses.
