For those interested in museums, Zeitz has the Museum Library which has a collection of over 30,000 books, spanning 6 centuries. This quirky museum houses Europe’s largest collection of pushchairs. Mass production of pushchairs in Zeitz began in 1846. At the turn of the century Zeitz and the surrounding area was home to 20 small and medium-sized companies involved in the manufacture of pushchairs. Today, production has largely moved to the Far East, but the museum is an interesting reminder of the past. For the art historian, the Lutheridenbibliothek houses a library of valuable documents on local German history, as well as coins, graphics, photographs and even a few unique works of literature.
For those interested in sight-seeing, the Moritzburg castle is a ‘must see’. It was once the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Zeit. The main building still retains most of its original features and one can tour the medieval bishop’s castle at certain times of the year. Another splendid sight is the Zeitzer Cathedral, dating back to around the 11th century. It still retains many of its original features. Points of interest include the grand pillars of the crypt and remnants of the cloisters. Zeitz is closely connected with the history of Martin Luther and the Michaeliskirche contains an original print of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses.
Down on the very southern edge of the Old Town is a Franciscan monastery that has kept its imposing and ornate medieval-style design to this day. After recent renovations the monastery is now open for tours, but check ahead as seasonal opening times apply.
