Car Hire Yeovil - Mini guide to Yeovil
Bordering rural East Somerset and Dorset, Yeovil is a typically welcoming west-country market town, with a weekly livestock market, as well as being the regional focal point for shopping, entertainment and leisure opportunities.
Todays town centre is a mixture of warm stone buildings dating from Yeovils heyday as an important leather manufacturing town, particularly in the High Street area, and the peaceful 14th century St John the Baptist Church should not be missed. The more modern area of town and shoppers paradise is the new Quedam Shopping Centre, also home to Yeovils Farmers Market held on the second Thursday of every month.
Leisure time can be occupied in the towns two theatres (Swan and Octagon), multi-screen cinema, and Goldenstones pool and leisure centre. A more modern evening of entertainment can be had at the towns 18-lane bowling centre in Old Station Road, or brush up on your winter sports skills at the Yeovil Ski Centre, Addlewell Lane.
Montacute House is a magnificent 16th century mansion, former home of layer Edward Phelips who opened for the prosecution in the famous trial of Guy Fawkes. Just four miles west of Yeovil in Montacute village (film location of Sense and Sensibility), the house is considered one of the countrys best preserved stately homes, and is particularly known for its extensive collection of tapestries. For the more adventure-minded, just seven miles north of Yeovil is Yeovilton, home to the Fleet Air Arm Museum, housing a collection of over 50 historic aircraft including the impressive Concorde prototype, and permanent exhibitions of historical conflicts from the two world wars to a modern-day aircraft-carrier simulation.
Regional airports at Exeter, Southampton (Eastleigh), Bristol and Bournemouth serve Yeovil, and each airport is approximately less than an hour away by car. Yeovil is also located near the A303, a major trunk route from the south-west to London, connecting to the M3 and M25 motorways for access to Heathrow and Gatwick airports, both approximately 2-3 hours away. Hourly trains depart from London Paddington station (duration: 2 hours).
