Car Hire Wuppertal - Mini guide to Wuppertal

Wuppertal

Are you planning a vacation to Europe or travel to Germany? Don’t miss one of Germany’s unique cities, the thousand-year old city of Wuppertal whose ribbon-like structure hugs the steep hillsides along the Wupper River.

Wuppertal, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany was original named Barmen-Elberfeld but after 1930 it was changed to Wuppertal (“Wupper Valley”). Roughly 362,000 people call Wuppertal as home. Wuppertall is a major industrial hub where Aspirin, the most famous pain-killer was invented by Bayer. The city is also producing the most in-demand products like textiles, chemicals, medicine (Bayer), rubber, electric, vehicles and printing equipment.

You will be awed by over 4,500 buildings classified as national monuments mostly dating from the periods of classicism, Art Nouveau and Bauhaus. A tour of the city takes you to its main sights and attractions which include Engels’ house (Engelshaus), Wuppertal Zoo, one of the largest, most nicely landscaped zoos in Germany, the Von der Heydt Museum, one the most important galleries in Germany where the first of Picasso’s works shown to the public was displayed.

The never-to-be-missed point in your itinerary should be the Schwebebahn Wuppertal monorail, one of the most unusual public transport systems in the world established in 1901. This inverted monorail had been used as background in a number of scenes in the movie Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (The Princess and the Warrior).

Like other German cities, Wuppertal boasts of a local beer exclusively brewed in the city. Wupper Hell and Wupper Dunkel can be best enjoyed at the Wuppertaler Brauhaus, a former swimming pool converted into a modern brewery close to the center of the city. A trip to Wuppertal would not be complete without sipping this local brew.

There is no airport yet in Wuppertal so you have a choice of landing in either the Düsseldorf or Köln-Bonn airports to get to Wuppertal.
