There are many buildings of architectural interest in Worms. The Worms Cathedral was built on Bishop Burchard’s orders in 1000-1025 AD and is one of the finest Romanesque buildings in Germany. It has dominated the city skyline for more than 100 years and contains a Gothic Nikolaus chapel with ornate figures across the south portal and a baroque high altar.

The Herrnsheim castle, originally built in 1460, has undergone several transformations over the years. From 1771 a baroque castle stood on the site, but this was severely damaged by a fire in 1792. The castle that stands on the site today was constructed from the ruins of that earlier castle and turned into an Empire-style building by architect Jakob Friedrich Dyckerhoff. It has within its grounds lush green lawns and parks as well as a large wood and an island in the centre of the nearby lake. The magnificent library tower added around the early nineteenth century is a beautiful sight both inside and out with rare French wallpaper decorating its interior, and the Orangerie serves as a fine café.

The Jewish Museum is another highlight, offering an insight into Jewish life and culture. It has a Rashi House with fine if slightly spartan interiors and the ground floor houses exhibits dedicated to the history of the local Jewish community. The exhibition room on the floor above documents the systematic destruction of that community during the Nazi regime. It shows how the Jewish people were gradually deported, persecuted and exterminated.

On a lighter note, the well-known Worms Whitsun Fair takes place between 26th May and 3rd June and is a trade exhibition that lasts nine days. It includes a fair ground and various parades and activities for children.

For those who enjoy music there is the Festival of Jazz and Joy. The festival runs from late June into early July and the town comes to life with five open-air stages and fun for all ages. There is also a wide range of culinary delights as people from cultures from all over the world converge on this little historic gem of a city.
