Car Hire Worms - Mini guide to Worms

You have just opened the door to the city of Worms, a kaleidoscope city which pulsates with a merry mix of sports and games or contemplative walks through its parks and animal gardens.

Worms (pronounced [vo?ms]), located at the southwest of Germany derived its name from the word Borbetomagus, of Celtic origin which means ""settlement in a watery area"". Aptly named because it lies on the Rhine, Worms is the only German member in the organization Most Ancient European Towns Network.

As of 2004, Worms has a population of almost 86,000 residents. It is an industrial centre which is famous for its local Liebfraumilch wine. The city was founded before 14 BC. Worms has 13 boroughs (popularly known as Quarters) surrounding the city center. It is considered next to Cologne in terms of Romanesque architecture due to the still existing four Romanesque churches. One example of which is the Worms Cathedral (Wormser Dom), dedicated to St Peter.

History records show that Worms prospered especially in the High Middle Ages. It was the site of several important events in the history of the Holy Roman Empire, and it was known as the former center for Judaism. Worms’ cemetery which dates from the 11th century is also believed to be the oldest in Europe. The city survived two wars and only 39 percent of the downtown area was destroyed. It was later rebuilt to preserve the original buildings.

Worms enjoys a temperate climate in the winter, with very slow accumulation of snow that melts within a short period. Rainfall is below average for the surrounding areas.

Complete your visit to Worms and fill your memory bank by visiting the city’s main attractions which includes the St. Peter`s Cathedral whose origins can be traced back to early Christian times during the late Roman era. Other attractions are churches, Jewish Worms, Herrnsheim Castle, Liebfrauen, Romance Monuments and Fountains, Museums, wine region and many other attractions that you simply must not miss.
