Car Hire Worksop - Mini guide to Worksop
The town of Worksop is situated at the northern edge of Sherwood Forest within the county of Nottinghamshire. For centuries Worksop remained a small market town, with life revolving around its agricultural surroundings.
The Priory Church of Our Lady and St. Cuthbert is an unexpected find in the middle of industrial Worksop. It is a superb example of Norman architecture situated with a fine view along one of the main western routes into town.
Whilst much of Worksops town centre has changed, some buildings still exist from hundreds of years ago, and a traditional open-air market is still held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Harley Gallery is a magnificent setting in which to view contemporary art and craft as well as displays of historical fine and decorative art from the Portland Collections. The Pilgrim Fathers Exhibition is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the "Pilgrim Fathers" who immigrated to America because of their religious beliefs.
Thoresby Exhibition Centre and Pierrepont Gallery is an exciting development in the heart of Sherwood Forest. It is the permanent home of the Countess Manvers collection, and a varied programme of exhibitions. Art Courses are also available. Worksop Leisure Centre offers all sporting facilities, and there are six golf courses around Worksop. The Regal Arts Centre offers cinema and live entertainment.
The countryside around Worksop is generally cultivated agricultural land to the north, east, and west, with natural broad-leaf woodland and cultivated pine forests to the south. There are several landscaped parks with man-made lakes. Situated at the northern edge of Sherwood Forest, Worksop is often referred to as Gateway to The Dukeries an area so called from the number of ducal residences in the vicinity. Here the Tales of Robin Hood tourist attraction is a pleasant day out.
The East Midlands Airport is the main centre for air travel to the Nottinghamshire area. The A60 is the main route for traffic heading north/south, and the A57 for traffic heading east/west. Trains leave roughly every half hour to Londons St Pancras and Kings Cross Stations (duration 3 hours).
