The first records of the town’s existence come from the tenth century, when it was bought by the then Bishop of Winchester. Even more interesting, especially to those tourists who are fascinated by early history, is the existence of Sutton Hoo, a cluster of grassy mounds. This site has become famous for containing Anglo Saxon treasure that belonged to Raewald, one of the earliest known rulers of England.

Another, less immediately serious claim to fame, is the legend that the rather strenuous route up Drybridge Hill in the town is the hill that the Grand Old Duke of York form the famous English nursery rhyme marched up with his ten thousand men.
