Car Hire Woodbridge - Mini guide to Woodbridge
Found in Suffolk, Woodbridge is a town that lies along the river Deben. The town has a population of nearly ten thousand. Mussidan, a town in France, is the twin town of Woodbridge.
The first records of the town’s existence come from the tenth century, when it was bought by the then Bishop of Winchester. Due to its position near the coast, it is not surprising that a lot of trade in the town centred on the maritime industry. Boat building, sail making and other maritime concerns helped the town thrive since the Middle Ages.
There are only four tide mills in the UK – special water mills run by tidal movement – and Woodbridge has one of them. Sir Francis Drake himself had some of his famous fighting vessels built in Woodbridge.
The mix of buildings in the town includes examples from the Tudor, Regency and Victorian eras. Even more interesting, especially to those tourists who are fascinated by early history, is the existence of Sutton Hoo, a cluster of grassy mounds. This site has become famous for containing Anglo Saxon treasure that belonged to Raewald, one of the earliest known rulers of England.
Another, less immediately serious claim to fame, is the legend that the rather strenuous route up Drybridge Hill in the town is the hill that the Grand Old Duke of York form the famous English nursery rhyme marched up with his ten thousand men.
