Car Hire Wolfsburg - Mini guide to Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg, Germany, is a picturesque little close-knit city with a wealth of attractions. It is a young city as it was created in 1938 as a town for the workers of the Volkswagen factories. Whilst the city itself is small enough to be seen on foot, Wolfsburg’s proximity to other cities in the Lower Saxony region of Germany makes hiring a car a good way to really take advantage of this great location.

The Phaeno Science Centre is a great location for the tourist, showcasing an impressive building with interactive science exhibitions and activities for all the family. The building, which stands on concrete stilts, won the 2006 Institution of Structural Engineers Award for Arts, Leisure and Entertainment Structures. Seasonal opening times apply so check ahead to avoid disappointment.

The Wolfsburg Castle was built in the 13th century and is home to the city’s museum, municipal art gallery and the Institute of Heidersberger. There is a changing programme of exhibitions of contemporary art and a wide range of materials on show. The building itself is regarded as one of Germany’s most important historical buildings and is often considered the most prominent landmark of the city.

Another castle with interesting architecture is located in the nearby Faller district (circa approximately 1550). It is well worth the short drive when you discover that it was once the home of the widow Clara, Duchess of Gifhorn. It now houses the Hoffmann von Fallersleben Living Museum and has a reconstructed bridge leading to its inner courtyard, kept in its original style. The museum explores the history of German poetry and democracy. .

The City Gallery shopping centre and the Südkopf Centre provide plenty of opportunities for those seeking souvenirs. Established in 1990 the Sudkopf Centre has a wide variety of shops. There is also the nationally famous ‘Culture Mile’ consisting of a theatre with regular performances, a Congress park and planetarium, one of the ten largest such buildings in Germany; and another art museum.

So in this city that was made famous by the Volkswagen car, there’s a huge amount to do and see for all the family!
