Wittenberg, Germany, is a place of great historical interest and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You should hire a car to make the most of this interesting city as there is a lot to see and do.

Wittenberg is the first and foremost city identified with Martin Luther of the German Reformation and attracts Protestant worshippers to its Lutherian sites. A statue of Luther can be found outside the grand Town Hall in the old city centre.

A focal point for the city in terms of notable structures is the Castle and the Castle Church. Both were rebuilt and redesigned around 1884, with the Reformation in mind, and have a sparse but beautiful architecture. The church houses a reformation cemetery in its grounds.

The Reformation History Museum has the pulpit from which Luther preached his sermons amongst its collections, which can also boast of being the world’s largest collection of Reformation history. It is open all year round, Monday to Saturday, although opening times vary seasonally so check ahead before you travel.

Other interesting sites include the Catholic Church in Wittenberg that was recently renovated in 1999. It is vividly decorated and stands out in this otherwise Protestant, functional city. The Castle Nudersdorf dates back to the 18th century, and is an imposing and beautiful place to visit. Wittenberg is also home to many portraits and paintings by the Cranachs, including the magnificent painting of the Lord’s Supper by Lucas Cranach the Elder in St. Mary’s church.

In terms of nightlife, Wittenberg has pub music nights that are held in around 20 restaurants in the old town during the last weekend of April, with various touring bands. There is also the ‘Luther’s Wedding’ festival held on the second weekend in June. It commemorates the marriage of Martin Luther to Catherine of Boras in 1525 with a spectacular parade and an excellent, family-friendly atmosphere. There is a medieval craft market and other events and a comprehensive programme of entertainments.
