Mini guide to Whistler
Widely touted as the world’s foremost ski resort, Whistler does not disappoint, especially with its incredible slopes and drops, fantastic snow coverage, magnificent mountain scenery and ease of access.
Conveniently located near western Canada’s largest city, Vancouver, the Whistler resort area actually consists of two mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, with the town of Whistler Village nestled in the valley between. The slopes of both mountains are equally perfect for skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports, and each boasts its own extensive system of lifts, chairs and gondolas, as well as a myriad of ski runs catering to all levels of ability. For the more adventurous, heli-skiing, cross-country skiing, and Nordic skiing can easily be arranged.
In the warmer months, hike the winding mountain trails and enjoy the flower-dotted meadows of the spring and summer, while in the autumn witness the magnificent colour palette of yellows, oranges and reds of the mountain slopes. Other outdoor recreational activities on offer include golf, mountain-biking, in-line skating, and horseback-riding.
Whistler Village is the focal point of the resort’s after-skiing activities, with numerous quality restaurants, bars, pubs, and cafes in which to relax. The town also features the acclaimed Whistler Museum, and has facilities for ice-skating. First-class accommodation is plentiful, both in Whistler Village and in nearby Whistler Creek.
A few hours drive from Whistler is the magnificent Vancouver Island, where you can enjoy other outdoor activities such as water sports, whale-watching and camping. Alternatively, if you have had enough of the open spaces, head for British Colombia’s capital of Vancouver and sample its exciting multicultural atmosphere and array of museums and galleries.
Vancouver International Airport serves direct flights from most US and Asian cities, while European visitors can transit via Toronto or Montreal. Transportation options from Vancouver to Whistler are numerous and reliable.
