Car Rental Weymouth - Getting to Weymouth
Once home to George III and famed as a holiday resort since Georgian times, the port town of Weymouth on the Dorset coast offers visitors first class beaches, historic buildings and easy access to some of south west Englands finest scenery.
Amongst the towns attractions, two of the most striking are Portland Castle and Nothe Fort. Built by Henry VIII from white Portland Stone, Portland Castle (16th C) overlooks the harbour and is one of the best preserved of his castles. Nothe Fort, built on a headland jutting into Portland Harbour, dates from 1860 and was service until 1956. Now it is a fascinating museum showcasing the history of the fort and the role of Weymouth in WWII.
Close to the town centre is the popular seafront of golden sand, a hub of activity in Weymouth. Away from the beach, in the town centre there are many fine buildings, some reminders of the town's glory days as a Georgian resort. Others include the converted Tudor cottages on Trinity Street.
As well as offering a wide range of restaurants, shops, and a host of pubs, there is two nature reserves, Radipole Lake and Lodmore, both within walking distance of the city centre. With lakes, paths, and a stunning variety of lilies, both reserver offer the visitor beautiful, relaxing surroundings.
Exploring the surrounding region is particularly rewarding. The town is situated between the Purbeck and West Dorset Heritage coasts, ideal for coastal walks and picnics, and the area inland from the sea has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Alternatively, to the south-west of the town is the popular Isle of Portland - an isolated coastal area joined to the mainland by the famous Chesil Beach.
With London (two hours) and Southampton (one hour) both a short drive away, Southampton International Airport and London Gatwick are the obvious choices for arriving by air, between them offering connections to most European and worldwide cities. Motorist can reach Weymouth via the A354 which links with the A35 And A37. Alternatively, trains depart from London Waterloo station every other hour (2.5 hour journey).
