WetzlarWetzlar, located in the romantic Lahn valley, is a fascinating, historical town and has much to offer to tourists and home to more than 54,000 inhabitants. The town is believed to have started its existence sometime between the 3rd to the 8th century. It became an industrial town with 100 ore mines n 1869 but the mining came to an end in 1926.
Wetzlar is about 70 kilometers away from Frankfurt airport and it is directly reachable from Aachen, Cologne, Kassel, Koblenz, Frankfurt am Main and Siegen. A well organized bus network serves the residents with 12 lines connecting to the to the central bus station. At night, the DiscoBus serves almost all parts of the city.
When it comes to shopping, Wetzlar is not far behind. There are two large shopping centers that provides practically everything you would ever need. It has around 110 shops and accommodates 1700 places for car parks. Retail trade is located mainly in the areas Bahnhofsstraße and Karl-Kellner-Ring.
Wetzlar prides itself of historic buildings, half-timbered houses and stone buildings in the Old Town (Altstadt) from Romanesque (Wetzlar Cathedral)and these had been restored and preserved.
In fact, a visitor can visit bout 50 noteworthy buildings like the five museums, towers, town hall, Wetzlar Cathedral, and other interesting places. Organized tours are flexible, adjusting to the time of the tourists. They can stay for two hours, four hours, a day and two days but that will leave you wanting for more. However, to get a bird’s eye view of Wetzlar, you can take the steep path which will lead you to Kalsmunt where the ruined tower of the castle built by Friedrich Barbarossa around 1180 is located. From here, you can see the panoramic view of Wetzlar and its surrounding areas.
Going around and immersing yourself in the city’s history may leave you with a large appetite. You have nothing to worry because you can have your fill of local specialties, international cuisine and gourmet menus from the many eating places in the city.
