Western Australia Guide

Guide

Australia’s largest state, Western Australia (WA) is a region of stunning contrasts. Even though it takes several days to drive across the state, car hire in Western Australia is a phenomenal way to traverse from one settlement to the next. Perth is the largest city in WA. Broome is the gateway to the Kimberleys. Geraldton boasts surfing beaches and Margaret River is a popular weekend getaway from Perth.

Hiring a Vehicle

Crossing the state by car is recommended. Plenty of internationally known suppliers ply their trade in WA, including Budget, Thrifty and the always-reliable Avis. Large discounts can be found online, so compare car hire deals before reaching Western Australia. Major towns like Broome, Perth and Albany all offer car rental opportunities.

Transport Options

Perth International Airport stands as Western Australia’s largest port of entry. From here, flights to Albany, Broome, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton and Kununurra link the state’s other major towns. Railway transportation outside Perth is limited, but several major highways span the state. These include the Eyre Highway, Great Eastern Highway, and Great Northern Highway.

Car Hire Driving Tips in Western Australia

Outside of the cities, sealed roads are generally safe and extensive. However, there are many unsealed highways (or roads) located throughout the state. Extreme care is required when driving on these roads. In addition, careful planning for petrol and food stops is a necessity if travelling into the rural areas of Western Australia.

Not to be Missed!

With your car rental in Western Australia, explore the oldest settlement in the state, Albany, about a four-hour drive from the capital. Margaret River is three hours south of Perth, and contains magnificent beaches and wineries for tourists. View dolphins, caves and other natural attractions in Shark Bay, or snorkel Ningaloo Reef to the south of Exmouth. Touring the majestic Kimberley region via Broome is a must for all nature-lovers.

Weather & Tourist Seasons

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Western Australia, regardless of where tourists want to explore. The spring month of April is a beautiful time to see the state. The wet season is finished in the north, there are wildflowers in abundance, and warm temperatures of about 26°C make the beaches pleasant for swimming and surfing.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card.
