Car Hire Wendouree - Mini guide to Wendouree

ON THE ROAD TO WENDOUREE

When Australia comes to mind, I picture Sydney with its outdoor theatre, luminous glass buildings and beautiful harbor. In passing on the great things it has to offer; I would like to take you to a quaint town that still embraces its roots of gold mining, and is a short distance from pristine beaches, and mountain climbing. A place called Wendouree.

In traveling to Wendouree, the closest airport is the Melbourne Tullamarine. We will need the services of a rent car because this trip is best seen driving. There are many exciting stops along the way, and your very own rent car affords the luxury of travelling at any pace you choose. So, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Leaving the Melbourne airport we are heading about 87 miles (140k) to an area called the Goldfields. Developed in the mid 19th century after the discovery of gold it is an area of Australia that almost seems to take you back a few centuries.

Wendouree, whose name is Aboriginal for .go away. is a suburb of Ballarat, the largest inland city located in Victoria. It houses the infamous Botanical Gardens established in 1887 along with the Tramway Museum. When gold was discovered during the mid 1800.s, it caused a panicked gold rush era much like that of California. People began to flock to find their riches. With history still intact, gold is still mined today and provides an excellent source of revenue.

Housing superior soil, Wendouree is considered one of the finest producers of rare and award winning wines. With all the cultural and historical things to do, is best known for Lake Wendouree who hosted the 1956 summer Olympics for rowing. The lake offers over 166 species of wildlife and excellent water sport activity which attracts over 20,000 tourists annually. With all this, Wendouree still hangs on to its beginning roots of small gold mining town.

In addition to all the lake activities provided, award winning wines and deep cultural history, this is only a small part of what the town has to offer. Along with all this, and within a short driving distance, you can be attending one of the annual festivals held throughout the year, lounging on a pristine beach, participating in or watching surfing competitions March thru August or mountain climbing on Mount Arapiles. However, you have to experience first-hand what is known throughout the world as being one of the world.s most scenic drives, The Great Ocean Drive.

The Great Ocean Drive, commissioned in 1918 as a tribute to those Australian.s that gave their life during WWI. Truly a labor of love, it took 14 years for unemployed soldiers to complete the 125 mile road which opened in 1932. Along with the spectacular view it also plays host to such landmarks as Otway National Park, Shipwreck Coast, Port Campbell National Park, the Twelve Apostles and recently collapsed London Bridge. Each of these sights is a landmark of its own, but when you add all the small towns, specialty food choices and a rain forest it makes the trip impossible to resist. Now, aren.t you glad you used a rent car service?
