Mini guide to Villefranche Sur Saone
Villefranche Sur Saone
Villefranche Sur Saone is a small town in eastern France’s Rhône-Alpes région, approximately one mile to the west of the Saône River. As well as its fine wines, the town is also home to the popular singers Benjamin Biolay and Coralie Clément, and footballer Grégory Bettiol.
The town was founded by the Count of Beaujeu in 1212 and two centuries later it was named capital of the province of Beaujolais. After surviving three separate sieges during the 15th and 16th centuries, the town’s ancient walls were finally removed in the early part of the 19th century.
In addition to being an important centre in the wine trade, Villefranche-sur-Saône also has an industrial base in chemicals, metallurgy and textiles. The town is on the Burgundy wine route which extends for 60 miles (100kms) from the village of Santenay to the medieval town of Saint-Gengoux-le-National. This picturesque route, known as Burgundy’s Prestige Wine Tourist Route, passes through 40 villages.
The town itself is compact, and most of its attractions can be seen on a walking tour. Although local buses are available and provide one way of getting around the area, it’s best to rent a car so that you can enjoy a tour of the surrounding wine country. It’s always a good idea to hire a car online before you arrive, in order to secure the best deal possible.
