Situated about 53 miles east of the Algarve’s main tourist town of Faro, Vila Real de Santo Antonio is a remarkable and picturesque place, boasting several interesting attractions. The Praca Marques de Pombal is the town centre’s beautiful and lively square featuring an orange tree edged obelisk, and a decoratively paved mosaic surface. Positioned on the Guardiana river’s west bank, Vila Real faces the Spanish town of Ayamonte, which is located on the river’s east bank.

The original town was flooded by the ocean in the 17th century and was later severely devastated due to the 1755 earthquake. It was Marques de Pombal who ordered the reconstruction of the town, which took just five months. The final result was a neat town with atmospheric streets lined by charming townhouses.

Visitors now have the option to amble along the river bank’s long esplanade while enjoying the magnificent views across Spanish territory. A car ferry service links the town to Spain.
