Vierzon is a charming and friendly town to the south of Orleans, and is surrounded by open countryside and a number of historic sites. It’s also the gateway to the forests and heath lands of Sologne and the vineyards, dells and streams of Berry.

In and around Vierzon you can visit more than 300 castles. Just as compelling a reason for visiting is the tourist route that is linked with the historic route known as ‘Jacques-Cœur.’ In fact, there are numerous routes to follow here, some of which were developed along themes. There’s the Romanesque Berry route, the chateaux route, an arts and crafts route, a gastronomic route, and, naturally, a wine route.

The route that runs south from Orleans will take you through a number of enchanting towns, such as La Source, Vierzon and medieval Bourges. It also crosses the beautiful Sologne heath and the Berry marshlands. A stop in Bourges is worthwhile, particularly for a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Saint Etienne Cathedral, and the stunning Jacques Coeur Palace.

Although there are local public buses, you probably won’t be able to take in much of what the area has to offer without renting a car. Hiring a car will give you the option of following many of the specialty routes through the region, as well as visiting as many of the 300 castles as you’d like.
