Mini guide to Vesoul
Vesoul
Vesoul is located in the Haute-Saône, and boasts a well-maintained, historic centre with fine examples of 15th to 17th century architecture. The city was the birthplace of noted 19th century artist and Orientalist, Jean-Léon Gérôme.
A number of the houses in the centre, such as Maison Baressols and Hotel Thomassin, feature interesting facades dating from the 15th and 17th centuries. The Georges Garret Museum was established in the early 1980s in an Ursuline convent, which dates from the 17th century.
On the lower floor of the museum is a department of archaeology that features an extensive collection of Gallo-Roman weapons, funeral steles, pottery and jewellery. On the second floor there is a collection of paintings and sculpture, including a number of works by local artist Jean-Léon Gérôme.
The Jardin Anglais, an English-style garden built in the mid-19th century, is located in the city centre. Several decades after the initial construction the gardens were extended, and today there is a rose garden, themed flower beds and a rock garden complete with its own waterfall and pond.
Vesoul’s centre is reasonably compact and a walking tour is a good way to see the sights. Although local public transport is available, if you’re interested in seeing more of the Haute-Saône region it would be a good idea to hire a car. Booking your car online will ensure that you receive the best possible price available.
