The city of Romeo and Juliet fame, Verona delights visitors with its charm, magnificent architecture and pleasant, easy-going atmosphere, making it one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations.

The most spectacular example of Verona’s stunning architectural heritage is the imposing 12th century Romanesque church, the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore. The enormous portal and rose window create an atmosphere of airiness and tranquility, and the exquisite relief sculptures, imposing bronze-paneled doors and beautiful frescoes combine to leave visitors enthralled. The artwork of the church is an interesting blend of Romanesque, Byzantine and Ottoman styles.

Take time to stroll the old narrow lanes and soak up the traditional atmosphere of the city, in particular the Via Cappello with its Casa di Giulietta, the fictional home of Juliet. Verona’s other sites of historical interest include; the charming San Fermo, Sant'Anastasia, San Pietro Martire and Duomo churches, the ancient Porta Leoni gate, the ornate Scaliger Tombs and the magnificent Loggia del Consiglio and Domus Mercatorum building. There is also the famed Casa Mazzanti, and the imposing towers of Torre del Gardello and Torre dei Lamberti.

Verona has ample first-class accommodations, excellent restaurants and quiet cafes but the nightlife is subdued, in keeping with the traditional atmosphere of the town.

From Verona, it is convenient to explore the other treasures of the Veneto region. The historically important towns of Padua, Vicenza, Montagnana, Cittadella and Castelfranco are all popular destinations for day trips. Further away are the sheer peaks of the Dolomites and the picturesque Lake Garda, while those seeking a livelier scene can head for the region’s capital, Venice.

Verona’s airport can be reached via connections from Milan or Rome, which are served by most major carriers. Shuttle services into the city are convenient and reliable.
